The company was started in 1989 by Jack Rothacker, a third generation heating and air conditioning engineer who learned the business from his father, Steve and grandfather, Ed.  When Steve Rothacker joined a fledgling heating and air conditioning franchise group called Unique Indoor Heating & Air Conditioning in the early 1970s as a company partner, Jack worked with his father as he built four Unique Indoor Comfort franchises in Illinois and Texas in the 1970s and 1980s.

Jack Rothacker struck out on his own in 1989 to Philadelphia to start a local Unique Indoor Comfort franchise with his father’s sponsorship and support.  And over the years, Rothacker assembled a second-to-none team of executives, managers, engineers, installers and customer service personnel who – through trust and hard work and a total focus on making a difference in the lives of customers with superior technology and service – expanded the Philly Unique franchise into a large, growing and exciting enterprise successfully serving customers throughout the Northeast.

In 2011 Rothacker split from the franchise system and converted his company to an independent organization with a new name, Sila Heating & Air Conditioning. This new moniker is taken from the word Sila (“see-lah”), the Inuit god of energy, air and movement.  And as a member of the Sila board of directors, Steve Rothacker still lends his expertise and support to the business his son started.

The new name will be a platform to fulfill a mission that hasn’t changed in 23 years:  to provide the highest quality heating and air conditioning services and products by supporting, empowering and rewarding exceptional people; by embracing a philosophy of continuous improvement; and by providing superior results to every customer.
